Registration for maritime archaeology conference “Changing Currents: Old Finds, New Perspectives” is now open!
From June 9 to 11, the Estonian Maritime Museum will bring together maritime archaeologists and specialists from other fields in Käina, Hiiumaa, to jointly discuss the past and present of maritime archaeological research and to look ahead to future challenges. The presentations on the first two days can also be followed online.
On the third day, bus will take participants on a field trip around Hiiumaa. Maritime Museum’s researcher and maritime archaeologist, Priit Lätti, will introduce island’s fascinating maritime heritage and offer an insight into its rich cultural history.
On the day following the conference, June 12, diving enthusiasts have an opportunity to discover the underwater cultural heritage of Tallinn Bay aboard the Maritime Museum’s research vessel Lood (possible sites include the wrecks Nargen, Bungsberg, Heino, Christine, Jaen Teär and the coastal defense battery Citadell). The maximum depth of the wrecks is 10–40 metres. The event’s occurrence and exact destination will be confirmed the day before, considering weather forecast. The cost of the dive is 50 euros (scuba tanks included), with an additional charge for the rental of individual equipment.
NB! A valid diving license is required for the participants. The dive will take place if there is a minimum number of 6 interested participants.
Purchase of the conference ticket provides you with:
- Access to conference presentations at the Windtower Experience
- Lunch and coffee breaks on the first two days of the conference
- Dinner on the first day of the conference
- Field trip along the maritime historical trails of Hiiumaa, led by the Maritime Museum’s researcher, Priit Lätti
For an additional fee, it is possible to book a seat on the bus that will take participants directly from the Seaplane Harbour to the conference venue and back. The bus departs from the Seaplane Harbour on June 9 at 7:45 AM and returns on June 11 at 8:30 PM.
It is also possible, if desired, to reserve accommodations during the conference at Lõokese Hotel in Käina, just a 5-minute walk from the Windtower Experience (44€ per night in a twin room, 70€ per night for single occupancy in a twin room). For presenters, the conference ticket and transport from the Seaplane Harbour to Hiiumaa and back are free. If desired, accommodations for the duration of the conference can be booked in a twin room for 44€ per night or for single occupancy in a twin room for 70€ per night. The conference registration closes on 25 May 2025. If you wish to cancel your participation, please notify us in writing at booking@meremuuseum.ee. If the participation is cancelled before 1 May 2025, half of the purchased ticket amount will be refunded. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after this date. e.
