The Maritime Museum invites submissions of best student research papers to a competition

This year, the Estonian Maritime Museum has launched their first competition of best research papers on Estonian maritime history. The deadline for submitting the student papers was extended to 15 January 2021.

When announcing the competition, Urmas Dresen, Director of the Estonian Maritime Museum, said, ‘With this annual competition, we wish to inspire students to research Estonian maritime history, because as a maritime country, our history in this field is long and fascinating, offering plenty of topics to look into. On the other hand, the competition is also a good way for the museum to keep an eye on the research being conducted in the field.’

Dresen added that the spring semester of next year will see a modular series of elective courses prepared and carried out by researchers of the Estonian Maritime Museum. ‘The lectures, much like the international digital archaeology conference that took place in October, introduce previously researched topics and methods to acquire additional knowledge on well-known items,’ said Dresen.

The competition is open to bachelor’s and master’s students of both Estonian and foreign universities who have defended their thesis no more than two years ago. The thesis must be submitted to the competition by 15 January 2021. The prize fund is 2,000 euros, which will be divided between the best master’s thesis, the best bachelor’s thesis, and a special prize.
