ENVIRONMENTAL CODE OF CONDUCT

The Blue Flag is an internationally recognised quality certificate granted to marinas, tourism boats, small crafts and beaches. The Blue Flag programme promotes sustainable development of beaches and harbours in four categories: water quality, environmental management, environmental education and information, and safety.

A beach or marina that has been granted the Blue Flag is guaranteed to be safe and have high-quality water, a clean coastline, and access to clean drinking water. If these standards are not met, the Blue Flag may be withdrawn. The Blue Flag is awarded for one season.

The Blue Flag programme has been operating in Europe since 1987 and in areas outside of Europe since 2001.

The Blue Flag has been awarded to more than 4600 beaches or marinas in nearly 50 countries. In the Baltics, the Blue Flag was first awarded to Pärnu Yacht Club and Pirita Harbour in Tallinn, Estonia, in 1994. In the past, Pärnu beach, Stroomi beach, Pikakari beach, and Pühajärve beach, as well as Roomassaare Harbour, Lohusalu Harbour, and Kuressaare City Harbour have flown the Blue Flag.

Since the 2021 season the Blue Flag has been flown at the Pirita and Pikakari beaches, the Seaplane Harbour Marina, Kärdla Marina and Orjaku Harbour.

The contribution of each individual is important in protecting the environment and receiving the Blue Flag. If you visit a beach or marina, you can contribute to protecting the surrounding nature by sorting your waste into the respective containers, using the provided toilets and bathing facilities, and saving clean water.

The Blue Flag is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and the process is managed through local organisations. In Estonia, the Estonian Lifesaving Association is responsible for reviewing Blue Flag applications and checking compliance with the criteria. ( www.evps.ee ).
